How does Cool Comfort cool?
Applying a menthol derivative (a cooling agent called menthoxypropanediol) to the skin creates a cooling sensation that, while it doesn't actually lower body temperature, stimulates cell sensors called transient receptor potential (TRP) channels*. These channels use different mechanism than the five senses. (*TRP channels made the news in 2021 when the discovery of thermosensory and mechanosensory receptors earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.)
When menthol derivatives are applied to the skin, TRP channels send signals to the brain that give the illusion of cooling--though the temperature of the skin actually remains the same.
Menthoxypropanediol also produces an enhanced cooling sensation when it comes in contact with moisture. The effect is very similar to what happens when you drink a glass of water after having a mint--the mouth feels even cooler, right?
A similar principle creates an even stronger feeling of cooling when sweat or humidity inside a face mask generates moisture against the product--not just when you first apply it.
